f! Peixets

The team sprung from the idea of the “Catalan side” of the Frisbillanas, an ultimate team from Sevilla. Some of their players temporarily lived in Barcelona and integrated with the local ultimate players. They started to play on the Barceloneta beach in September 2006 under the name “Frisbillers” (pronounced Frisbee-ers). Also bringing friends and acquaintances over, but who rarely came twice.

After a disappointing winter due to low attendance, they decided to resume pick-up in the spring of 2007. Saturday mornings continued, but attendance was still not more than 6 people. The incorporation in May of a veteran player of the “Quijotes” a team from Madrid, Maria, led to a hopeful rise of spirits for the upcoming summer. They came to form a group of 15 players, some of them members of “Patatas Bravas”, a veteran Barcelona ultimate team who decided to lend their experience and to provide guidance for our mission. Other excited, sport-minded or just crazy people whose schedules luckily coordinated with ours also felt the call of the disc and joined us.

In September the “Frisbillanas” competed for the first time at the Spanish Championship, in Laredo, Cantabria, with two teams, one primarily for the players from Barcelona. After the success in the tournament –ninth position and a win–, this bunch of thrilled beginners decided to assemble a new team of their own.

On October 3rd 2007 they made the “Peixets” and the “Piranyes”, the women’s team. The name “Peixets” was Araceli’s suggestion, who is the secretary of the team. It originates from practices at the beach. When the force is towards the mountains, we yell “forzamos pescaito!” (forcing little fish!). The “Pescaito” is the view of the big whale, a monument created for the 1992 Olympic Games under the Hotel Arts, in front of our original training place.

The official colors of the team shirts were chosen to be sky blue and orange, in that order. Our logo is a “peixet”, a friendly little aquatic animal that was designed by our friend Rafa, member of the Frisbillanas and one of the founders. The last step to complete the team was the addition of our coach Mariano, from the Guayotas, an ultimate team from Gran Canaria. He is an incredibly experienced player who has a wealth of information and coaches us on everything, from technical throwing and broad ranging strategies, to team building and physical conditioning. But above all, he executes all of these teachings with the clear message of having fun and building friendships.

Three weeks later “Peixets” was presented as the official name at the 1st Copa Castilla in Alcobendas (Madrid), obtaining a meritorious 5th position. .

On 11th November 2007 we played abroad for the first time at the 1st Tournoi de Les Collègues, at the Couronne beach, close to Marseille, in France. We obtained the 5th and 7th positions, and won the Spirit Award!!!!.

“Peixets” is a Barcelona team that has adopted people from places all over the world. This allows us to share ultimate ideas both strategic and fun, as well as make great friends. Our team is open to everyone that wants to have a great time and play a terrific sport.
