In September I started the featured tournament series with a post about the 10th Monkey Foo. There have been special posts about the EUCS and the UPA Club Championships, but now I'd like to get back to initial idea of this series of articles: presenting a truly special Frisbee tournament by interviewing one of the organisation's core members.

Today we talk about the CFC -- or Coman Fruta Cabrónes (eat fruits, bastards). This weekend features the 6th edition, the Coman Fruta Cabrónes 2008. A big thanks by the way to Alberto from Mubidisk (Lanzarote) for answering my questions.

How did everything start?

In 2003 we created our local Ultimate team Mubidisk. In the same year we organised our first tournament with the help of BULA, the B.U.T.T. 2003. (N.B.: BULA regularly helps local Beach Ultimate lovers to promote a special Beach Ultimate event somewhere on the planet. 2002 they started the Mundialito in Brazil, in 2005 the Israeli BulaFLOW, and this year the Beach Ultimate Super-Series of New Zealand).

We chose November as the best month to organise a Beach Ultimate Tournament on the island. BULA took charge of promoting the event and inviting the players. At the end over 80 players turned up, making the first beach-only Ultimate Frisbee tournament on the Canary Islands a huge success (N.B.: island-neighbour Tenerife's Dr. Sand & Mr. Grass started in 2001).

In 2004 we organised the 2° BUTT, again with the generous help of BULA. And then we started in 2005 our own tournament, called CFC, a dream team coed beach ultimate tournament. And that's what it still is today.

How did the tournament evolve during the last years?

Not much changed compared to the first edition five years ago. Back in 2003 people stayed at the Youth Hostel in the middle of the island, and dinners had to be prepared by the players. Now everybody is hosted in apartments close to the field in Puerto del Carmen. Basically we provide:

  • 3 days of beach ultimate in the sun
  • 3 nights in apartments close to the field
  • 3 breakfasts
  • 1 BBQ plus beach party
  • 1 dinner in a very good Restaurant
  • Player gift
  • Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd as well as the Spirit winner
  • Paella during the awards ceremony

Our biggest plus happens to be also our biggest problem: we live on a Island far away from Europe. Since there are no low-cost flights to the Canary Island, we hardly get around 10 teams per edition. Generally we aim for 12 teams, but sometimes we get only eight. We are growing slowly...

The next featured tournament article is already in the pipe. Don't hesitate to propose a Frisbee tournament you particularly like, and make it a featured tournament on the ffindr blog.
