This Labor Day weekend, August 30 and 31, top Guts Frisbee® players from around the country will compete in the 2008 U.S. Nationals to be held at the Sunnybrook Golf Bowl and Motel in Sterling Heights, Michigan. This officially sanctioned, world-class event is being held in the metro Detroit area for the fourth consecutive year by the United States Guts Players Association. Play is expected to start by 10:00 a.m. each day, with the Finals set for 4:30 Sunday afternoon. Guts Frisbee is an extreme sport featuring lightning-fast throws and incredible one-handed catches. Invented in Michigan in 1958, this exciting, high-speed game has spread all over the world, from Japan to Great Britain and from Ireland to Taiwan. Guts is played by firing the disc at the opposing 5-man team lined up fingertip to fingertip about 15 yards away. Typical flight time is less than 1/2 second. If the “shot” isn’t caught cleanly in one hand, either on first impact or after being deflected into the air, the thrower’s team scores a point and the player hit with the disc must throw the return shot. If the disc is thrown short, high, wide, vertical, or upside down, the receiving team scores a point and can have their best thrower take the next shot. If the disc is caught, no point is scored and the catcher throws the return shot. Each game is played to 21 points and requires a minimum two point margin of victory. For the first time ever, a team from Japan will be competing at the U.S. Nationals. They’ll be facing the top players from around the country, including teams from Albuquerque, Wisconsin, Detroit, and the newly crowned World Champions, the Boomtown Saints. The Saints are from Lansing and prevailed over a strong field at the 2008 World Ultimate and Guts Championships earlier this month in Vancouver, BC. The Nationals will once again include a Youth Division for new players under the age of 18, where all kids are welcome to come out and have fun playing this exciting, fun-filled sport while picking up pointers from the best players in the world. The tournament site at Sunnybrook is easy to find. Take I-696 to Mound Road North (exit 22), go north about 6 miles, and turn right onto 17 Mile Road. Go about half a mile and Sunnybrook will be on your left. For more tournament information, action photos, and video go to http://www.GutsFrisbee.com.
