The 22nd Annual Kaimana Klassik was played this President's Day weekend at the Waimanalo Polo fields on Oahu, Hawaii. The skies were mostly sunny, with occasional clouds and sprinkles to keep it a (relatively) cool 75 degrees. The fields were green, forgiving, and a hammer's throw from the best beach on the island.
This was a year when the impossible happened.
Last year's Open champions, Skeletor, repeated as champions, but this year of the beer bracket - they brought a squad substantially reduced in size (both the number of players and the size of those individual players).
Lonestar, from Texas, fielded a strong team, with a number of players fresh from open club nationals. And yet, they managed to not win a game in pool play. It's quite possible that they had more fun than any other team...
Except for Sanban, an all-star team of recent college grads from Japan. This was the first year that a Japanese team won the Saturday night party at Kaimana, and they gave Ono a run for their money in semifinals.
But with no further ado, here are the 2009 champions. In the Open Division, the winner was Ono, who won back the title after losing it last year to Skeletor. The Women's Division champ was the Shaolin Coyotes who continued their run.
